Yolk

Updated: Apr 4, 2021

Yolk is a puzzle adventure game where the player takes the role of Yolk, a small egg-like creature. Yolk discovers that eggs hatch and a new creature emerges out of the shell to live a new life. Learning this, Yolk aims to create a safe environment for the pal inside. It will need a home, a source of food, some friends, and protection from predators who are looking for a snack. The player does this by talking to an original cast of characters, collecting items, and traversing the sprawling, leafy jungle. Will you help Yolk prepare for the biggest moment in its life?

The art direction for this game utilizes 3D environments with 2D character sprites. The colors are bright and inviting to make the player want to explore the environments and meet new characters.

This game was developed in my Production 2 class at Champlain College. Our team is made up of 8 individuals each with a variety of skills and backgrounds. We worked on this project over the course of our semester both in person and then online during the COVID pandemic. After school ended, we continued the development of the game during the summer to be able to publish the game online. In August, we released the game on Itch.io for free for players/employers to experience the world we created.

For this project, I was Lead Producer and Scrum Master. My main responsibilities were helping plan and manage our meetings, onboard new team members, make sure our team members were all following correct Scrum methodology, and helping remove any impediments the team ran into. One of the problems that we ran into as a team was communication issues between the designers and our programmers about what features we needed to focus on before release. To fix this, we had to sit down as a whole team and prioritize our product backlog and made sure that the designers and programmers were abiding by the prioritization.
